The very first thing you must do has nothing to do with the law, it’s more of a personal thing.

Consult with a Divorce Attorney

Filing for Divorce
After consultation, we work with you to decide whether it is appropriate to file now or if certain actions need to be taken before filing divorce. If it is the right time to file, a divorce complaint will be filed on your behalf.
If it is not, a legal separation may be the best option.
Keep in mind that just because a divorce complaint has been filed it doesn’t mean that you must get a divorce. A complaint can be withdrawn at any time.
What Happens after Divorce is Filed?
After filing the divorce complaint, normally both parties will exchange the necessary financial information to divide marital assets. If your spouse is unwilling to voluntarily provide this information, we can use the court system in order to force the disclosure.
After the exchange, attempts are made to reach an agreement on the division of the assets as well as the other economic issues such as spousal support, alimony, and child support. If minor children are involved, we will also attempt to negotiate a child custody order.
If agreements cannot be reached on economic issues or child custody, hearings can be scheduled so that the court can decide these issues.
